Working with trauma can challenge the clinician. This presentation aims to help clinicians further develop their skills, understanding and confidence in working with trauma in clients. There will be some focus on helping clinicians to better understand life patterns and beliefs that may impede effective work with trauma clients.

Learning Objectives

  • Increase skills in working with client ambivalence and formulating challenging client behaviour via Schema Therapy and the use of mode formulations to deal with trauma based presentation.
  • Examine the use of chairwork to assist with client avoidance in sessions.
  • Explore ways to use Imagery Rescripting (ImRs) to increase self-compassion.
  • Increase awareness of our own (therapist) beliefs and therapeutic patterns that may impede effective work and limit confidence.
  • Discuss ways of managing client dissociation and flooding of emotion in sessions.
